30 Questions

1) Time travel: you're limited to a particular time (of your choosing) and country/region (of your choosing). Where and when do you go? Why?
Ancient Athens would be my first choice, around 400-300BC. Partly, I think, this is because I grew up reading and rereading D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths, after which anything involving Greece has a kind of haze of the magical about it.
To a larger (and more rational) extent, though, I'd love to experience a society that (as I understand) valued learning and study above all else, in which the pinnacle of achievement was to be smart enough to sit around and pursue knowledge for knowledge's sake. I'm sure it's a gross simplification and projection of my own wishes for an ideal society, but there it is. And hey, they came up with Epicureanism (though I would prefer its more modern interpretation). Who can fault that?
Among the contenders were China ~2000BC and Renaissance Italy, FYI.
2) If you could have another pet, what would you consider?
Assuming this pet can't be another cat and would have to be kept indoors...well, I don't know that I would want a non-feline pet. If forced to choose, I'd probably go with a ferret, even though they smell like ass. They're wicked cute, curious, and fun to play with. Fuzziness is also an important criterion; I want a pet that I can cuddle.
3) Ever considered permanent forms of body art?
Never. I'm simply not interested in tattoos or piercing, though I have nothing against those who are. I just don't feel the need to decorate my body. Also, the pain.
4) What's your first memory of

I have two; I'm not sure which came first.
I recall playing X-COM: UFO Defense with haak0n and my roommate KB watching over my shoulder and hleping[1] well into the night. They each received an appropriate reward[2] for their hlep.
I also remember ordering pizza with entrymates, and haak0n and I somehow wordlessly agreed to try to convince one of them she hadn't paid, even though she clearly had.
5) What's the last thing that made you cry?
I don't know who of y'all saw it, and even less who of y'all enjoyed it, but I have to admit that Darren Aronofsky's latest movie The Fountain made me cry. If nothing else, it's one of the most visually beautiful films ever made; and I found it really moving as well, if sometimes confusing and turgid.
___
(1) Every time one of my soldiers was killed, one of them would ask me, "Hey Mike, would that have happened if you didn't suck?"
(2) A hard punch in the shoulder.
