Advice

Hey Bostonians,

Does anyone know what it's like to book a venue -- say club or bar -- for a music gig?

Yeah -- are you looking to rent the whole night or just get a show?

Not sure -- I'm surprised there's a difference, actually. I'm curious as to what the deal is with both.

Well if you want to just play a night at the M.E. or TT's then you send in a demo and then follow up looking to get booked on an evening. New acts usually get a slot on a Tuesday and depending on how many people they bring in are booked for better nights in the future. A lot of times the booking agent will ask another band on a bill to suggest another act though so one band will end up having a group of bands who know each other or compliment each other. This is how a lot of weekends are booked it seems.

If you want a venue for yourself I'd suggest renting something like a VFW and running the night, although some clubs will rent out.

I know the woman who is doing the booking for the Skybar there so I can maybe help get something heard there.

Seems like renting the entire night is the better way to go -- I kind of doubt what I have in mind would audition well. Do you know if any clubs rent out?

Looks like you can rent Club Passim. No idea if that's the kind of space you had in mind, though.
