I'm in Saranac Lake, NY, sitting in a little bakery with WiFi. The bakery is part of the Saranac Hotel, where I'm staying for three days while the Gregg Smith Singers prepare for a reading of aether (among many other pieces), as part of the Adirondack Festival for American Music.

[livejournal.com profile] sigerson picked me up at Logan just after midnight last night and escorted me home, where a cat was desperately waiting to show me her tummy. I got reacquainted with all my old things, finally going to bed at 3am. Awoke at 11am, had comfort food (Mr. Sushi) with [livejournal.com profile] sigerson, and took off at 4pm.

It's a 5.5-hour drive from Boston to Saranac Lake, and a lovely one -- though in the dark, the rural roads off of I-87 would bring to mind the horror movie of your choice. Surrounded by high and dense trees, I expect it can be a harrowing drive late at night, with both the real dangers of large and heavy animals crossing the road, and the imagined dangers of...well...let's just say I hear a lot of first-person-perspective ghost stories from my relatives in the Philippines. But this time of year, dawn comes late, and my drive was sunlit to the end.

While I had been dreading the long drive, it actually proved extremely pleasant and peaceful. The last two weeks have been something of a sensory overload, and it was really quite nice to turn off my higher brain functions for not quite six hours, listening to my music and not having to constantly process new information.

My last day, Saturday, in Oregon was a busy one, with two concerts by Fireworks, a five-hour reading session to accommodate all the composers who had written for guitar, and a party at a grad student's house.

It's a bit intimidating to have encountered two composers who are doing things similar to what I want to do, only better.

By the end, I was sad to leave but happy to go. I had a wonderful time up at the Bach Festival, and I hope to go back someday. 11 days seemed just about right -- long enough to be truly substantial and filling, but not so long that I got tired of being there at all. Hopefully, I'll have the gumption to stay in touch with the folks whose company I enjoyed.

The festival you were at sounded pretty terrific -- and I can also see why it was good to come home, see partner & cat, and then have a long chill drive which allows the brain to recharge.

Here's hoping the Adirondack Festival will be a good experience, too. See you on the flipside!

How neat to learn that BriCo (that's what I called him when we were music majors together, anyway) is in your high esteem. I knew he was performing and writing, but I didn't know what kind of stuff he was doing. And don't sell yourself short.

Glad to hear that the experience was enjoyable and that you're on to something else cool. It sounds like a real whirlwind of good experiences.

:)

Sorry I couldn't help again on this end - last minute vacation plans intruded.

Congratulations on all the readings you got - I'll be curious to hear the results, if any are good enough for you to want to share.
