Went to a Kronos concert tonight. Their encore, a transcription of Hendrix's live Star Spangled Banner, was absolutely amazing.

Unfortunately, the encore was my favorite part.

---

Afterwards, we were hanging out at the Brewery when some of the Fireworks ensemble shows up. So I'm having drinks with Fireworks. That's pretty cool.

Then members of the Kronos Quartet show up. So I'm having drinks with the Kronos Quartet.

Holy shit.

It's not as cool as it might sound, because there were around 30 of us. But it's still pretty cool.

That sounds phenomenal. I have a copy of Requiem for Adam waiting at my parents house that I'm getting impatient about.

Are their equivalents to Kronos that don't use strings?

Not that I'm aware of - the sheer range of stuff that they have played and/or covered would be hard to beat, let alone the sort of uber-coolness they seem to exude in all of their recordings.

I don't think anybody's doing quite what Kronos is, in terms of transcribing rock; Bang on a Can has dabbled with it, but not with any real conviction.

Not that Kronos is particularly focused on it, either, unfortunately. They've gotten a bit too diffuse of late, IMO.
