sigerson picked up Franz Ferdinand's eponymous album, largely on the strength of "Take Me Out", is a rocking track that we encountered in
Guitar Hero. I like it a lot, but it's an odd piece of work -- Franz Ferdinand strikes me not so much as a retro-'80s band so much as an '80s band that happens to be active in the '00s.

I got my bloody valentine's
loveless (16 years after the fact) after hearing "sometimes" on
yaoobruni's
History of Punk. Their music is mostly a wash of heavily distorted guitars, with vocals hidden just underneath a huge wall of slowly changing sound -- an aesthetic for which I have a real weakness.
I wish I'd found it years ago -- it's a gorgeous album, and can't not have inspired some bands I dig; Cocteau Twins, aarktica, and signer in particular.
Oddly enough,
loveless itself often strongly reminds me of The Beatles'
Sgt. Pepper album.
