A coworker described RHCP as three really tight funk musicians plus Anthony Kiedis, and that seems about right. I respect them, but they strike me as a solid band rather than a great one, and Kiedis's cooler-than-thou act veers between tolerable and grating. I speculate that AK, as an incredibly charismatic frontman and their weakest musician, both enables and hinders their success.
